  7. When we heard news that several, very popular, graphics formats were
  8. menaced by software patents, at Cloanto we took a strong position in favor
  9. of a new, improved format: PNG (Portable Network Graphics).
  10.  
  11. We are presenting here a PNG DataType for the Amiga, some background
  12. information on PNG, sample source code to use DataTypes and an ARexx
  13. script to automatically find GIFs and convert them to PNG. As the creators
  14. of Personal Paint, we've also included some information on that program.
  15.  
  16. The DataType supports all types of PNG-encoded images. Grayscale images
  17. are converted to palette-based images. True color (up to 48-bit) images
  18. are dithered using a fast Floyd-Steinberg method. (More professional color
  19. quantization options are available in Personal Paint.)
  20.  
  21. This DataType also reads the Author, Copyright and Comment fields
  22. (DTA_ObjAuthor, DTA_ObjCopyright and DTA_ObjAnnotation DataType
  23. attributes). The included source code shows how to read this information.
